The five-year-old girl in the photo is standing in front of a water fountain with two of her cousin, Kelvin and Brian. This photo is taken in the middle exit of the Hong Kong gold coast shopping mall. The water fountain is located in the middle of the mall with Rome-style design. There are some pretty pink and white flowers around the fountain. Also, there are some palm trees beside the road of the mall which create a feel of vacation.

 

This photo might be taken in autumn at 2000, as three of they are dressed in a long-sleeved shirt and long pants. The little girl named Jessie are wearing a red polo shirt and black pants, she smiles happily and enjoys taking photos. The plump boy who standing on the middle and holding the little girl left hand is Kelvin, wearing a dark blue polo shirt and black pants. Kelvin right hand is holding a skinny boy called Brain who wearing a white Tee shirt and brown pants, holding a bottle of water on his left hand. It must be a sunny day as three of them are also wearing a white cap with different figures and the sunshine has shine on skinny Brain’s face, which makes him could not open his eyes normally.

 

Kelvin and Brain are brothers; their family’s name is Lee. Jessie’s family name is Huen. Even they are living in different family, but both families are living in Tsuen Wan. They often visit each other’s home asthey are living so close. Their parents will always design a weekend activates for three of them, so they can always play together. Therefore their relationship is more similar to brother and sister. Going to the Hong Kong gold coast is one of their weekend activates, Lee’s family and Huen’s family will have lunch together. This photo is taken by Jessie’s mother, Dilys Lam, while the families are waiting for the food. The weather might be a bit cold; they choose not to swim but to walk across the beach and the mall. Jessie’s mum always believes that, taking photo is the best way to record children growth. She often take photo for her daughter and son, then she will show it to them when they grow up.

 

All of those photos are still keeping in a cabinet, waiting for the child to grow up and ask her parent for a childhood’s photo.And now, Jessie needs to do her university assignment, therefore she asks for a photo to find out her childhood. It is more like a detective game, aims to find out who Jessie are.

 

Jessie has forgot how she look like when she was small. She never know what little Jessie feels because she never remember. But in a childhood’s photo, she realizes that she loves smile a lot, and it recalls more and more memories. She remembers when she was small, her balle’s teacher asks her to smile in anytime on any moment because she is a performer. But when she is in her primary school music lesson, something change her.

 

Jessie was grade five that time. Her English teacher thought Jessie didn’t hand in the homework and ask her to gave him a reason,however, Jessie found her homework in her school bag and hand it in immediately. The music teacher knew that Jessie hadn’t hand in her homework but she didn’t know she hand it in already,therefore she thought the english teacher have just punished Jessie. Then, when the little girl attend the music lesson, she was mad at her.”How come you can still smile after you have been punished?Are you sick?Don’t you feel shame?”the music teacher shout at her in front of the class. Jessie didn’t know how to answer it, she just stop smiling and started to cry. Jessie used to love music a lot,but after this happen, she stops to learn any music instrument.

 

The little girl didn’t stop smiling forever. Even there are bad memories in the past,but it will never last. She believes that smile can give people power, this is her faith. She believes herself more than the people she hates, therefore she still loves to sing. Jessie have asked her parents before, why is she called “Yan Kiu“ (Chinese Name) ? Her parents tell her “Yan” are represent joyful and cheerful and “Kiu” are represent bridge. They want her to be a bridge which bring happiness to others. At that moment, Jessie recognises that the final mission in her life, is to become the bridge. Here are still a lot of little Jessie that present Jessie doesn't remember yet,but she believes that they will come back someday, because they are part of her.
